Hi people.

This time a short tutorial on how to let a biped walk. there are a couple of different ways you can do this.
For example you can use the footstep mode, or you can use pre-recorded motions and load that onto you biped.
I will presume you have some knowledge. if you dont understand it, please contact me!

When you play with the footstep mode you will see that the result isn’t that good.
You can get this better but it will require some work.
A quicker way is using pre-recorded motions. the are called ‘Motion capture’ files. most of them are .BIP or .BHV files. you will find some motions on the 3dsmax cdrom. we are also gonna use motions that you will find on the 3dsmax cd-rom.

There are also a couple of ways to load and use .BIP files. i will show you one. i find this one simple to use.

Now enough blabla, lets start off and create a biped.011.jpg
Goto the motions tab and go into the Motion Flow mode.
I use this to load my motions and play with them.
also the can be used to combine motions. :) i’ll show you how.

Now when you click Motion flow, you will see some other options.
To start off click on “show graph”

 021.jpg
This will open up the graph view, a little windows in wich you can load
the motions.
Click on the button “Create multiple Clips” and load the WALK.BIP file.
Do this again and load up the WalkStop.bip file

You should have the same as me:

To get a motion on your biped you have to create a script (dont be afraind it is not maxscript hehe)
If you look in the properties panel of max you see a button that is called Create script.
041.jpg
click the button and then click on on the WALK button in your motion flow graph.
when you do this you will see the blue bar turns red, now click again on the WALK. you will see a arrow, and you can see the script is adjusted.051.jpg

Now click on the walkstop. rightclick to finish your script.
you should have something like this >>

Now when you play you animation you should have you character walking and it
Stops.

When you want the motion to go on your biped, click the script button. and then click on the
“Create unified motion”. you can now go out motion flow and enjoy your biped’s walk.

Hope you have learned something!

Best regards,

  14. One thing ive found with all charecter movement tutorials is that its all well and good having your person move in the way the bip says.. But when i load a bip onto my dude he runs off in a direction I dont want him too, So my question is… After adding a BIP how do you change the direction of your model?

5 Stars and A big chocolate cake if you can give me an answer…

  17. i always try to find animation file( .bip, .bhp) ,but always failed , can u help me & can u tel me about link constraints animation , im weak in link animation as ( link a complite lamp , in orderthat i animate.

  18. In the motionflow tab under your script are settings which you can change. Settings are:

    Start frame
    start positon (x/y/z)
    start rotation.

With start rotation you can change the side your character is facing to. For example:
start rotation: 180, means you character will face the opposite way! :)

  19. Thought that the tutorial was great, straightforward & simple to follow, even for me.

Sometimes, its’ quicker to do stuff this way, than it is to faff about with mo-cap files, or mess around with progs like Endorphin or Motion Builder (although both are really excellent once you get the hang of them – & no, I have’nt yet!).

Your tutorial was much appreciated by me!

OMG all this time it was motion flow that enabled it to change the rotation without editing keyframes!
    Thank you so much!
I spent hours trying to fix up some animations but they were facing the wrong direction, there didn’t seem to be any other way to reorient the rotation without editing keyframes.
